Save Electricity This Winter – Tips from an Electrician

There are lots of ways to save on the cost of electricity even in winter, so follow tips from an electrician below on how to save electricity this winter and you’ll find you have a lower electricity bill.

Layer Up on your Clothes

Winters in Brisbane are often quite mild and the chill of the morning sometimes heats up to a warm afternoon. School children will often wear shorts under their tracksuit pants so they can remove them as the day heats up.

On the weekend or during the day at home, wearing extra layers allows you to save electricity this winter. Thermal underwear from the likes of Kathmandu is very effective in keeping you warm and an excellent investment, which will pay for itself over and over. Furthermore, you will be more comfortable and won’t need as much bulky outerwear.

Use Cold Water for Washing Clothes

Many people are unaware of the fact that washing your clothes using cold water is very effective and can save a significant amount of money by using less electricity as you will be heating less water.

Only Heat the Rooms You Are Using

With open plan homes, this can sometimes not be as effective as the more traditional planned homes. If you are using ducted air-conditioning system to heat your home, hopefully you will have some zones that you do not need to heat. If you have split systems, you can save electricity this winter by only heating the rooms that you are using. If you are using small or large electrical heaters, these can be very effective in heating an area quite quickly and maintaining the temperature as well.

Door Snakes

Getting rid of nasty cold drafts is easily solved with a door snake and this is another way that you can save electricity this winter.

Curtains and Blinds at Night

When heating a room, a great deal of the heat escapes through uncovered windows so close all blinds and curtains to keep the heat in and will therefore use less electricity overall.

Curtains and Blinds During the Day

On the warm summer days, you can use sunlight to heat your home. Let the sun into your house by opening up the curtains and blinds on your north, east and west facing windows and sliding or bi-fold doors. You will be surprised at how warm your rooms can be just by using natural sunlight here in Brisbane during the winter.  Of course, don’t forget to close the blinds and curtains once the sun starts to go down as this will keep the heat in and save electricity this winter as your home will be warm already and you just need to then maintain this temperature.

Have Short Showers

Shorter showers means less hot water which means less electricity and thus more money in your pocket.
